DVD & CD Johann Jakob Bommer Organ (1735/36) - The Church of the Dominican Convent St Katharinental, Switzerland

  • More Details

Between 1735 and 1736 Johann Jakob Bommer, the organ builder from Thurgau, constructed an organ of 19 stops in the richly decorated baroque case on the west gallery of the Abbey church, with Great, Rückpositiv and Pedal divisions. Given that he had spent a long period of training in Kuttenberg (Kutna Hora) in what was then Bohemia, the instrument shows important features of Bohemian organ building. In the course of restoration work carried out between 1965 and 1969 by the Kuhn Organ Building Company, Männedorf, the instrument was returned to its original condition.

This film gives a portrait of this magnificent instrument. Visuals of the organ and the church interior blend with the organ works played by Matthias Blumer - complemented by appropriate commentaries on the music, instrument and church - are pleasing to the senses, yet inform.
