The district "Weimarer Land" (in the east of the German federal state of Thuringia) disposes of an organ instrument of historical value. There are instruments that date back to the days of Bach and others from the 19th century whose great importance could take effect far beyond the district, if only they were known.
The Thuringian organ tradition dates back more than 300 years. As early as in 1492, Hieronymus Keilholtz built an organ for the city of Weimar’s municipal church St. Peter and Paul.
So far, there has been no register which extensively describes these important instruments in a recapitulating way, i.e. combining their "vital data" (location, builder, year of manufacture, gamut, musical pitch, action etc.) with the visual aspect of a "portrait picture". Of course, individual instruments are pictured in calendars and great compendiums of the Free State of Thuringia. However, it is the diversity and closeness of 200 instruments that shall be demonstrated by means of this organ guide. This also includes lost instruments in order to reveal the entire spectrum of organ building.
After an extensive examination of files, the most precise portrait of the organ country "Weimarer Land" was created in co-operation with the cantors and priests of the parishes as well as with the regional organ players and the organ builders. By means of this book, Juergen Postel (pictures and graphics) and Viola-Bianka Kießling (collection of material) try to arouse one’s interest in the great diversity of instruments and, at the same time, point out the necessity of care and use of these instruments that are so rich in tradition.
